Medical care
Treatments
Alongside the therapies, Foltra also uses pharmacological treatments. They are always prescribed and supervised by the medical service.
At Foltra we use pharmacological treatments aimed at improving and increasing the number of neurons created, in children and adults alike.
The neurotrophic factors used are always applied individually and personally, under continuous supervision by the medical and nursing service, in order to optimise each person's improvement.
Any pharmacological treatment is prescribed after assessment by the medical team and adjusted to each case. This page is informative and does not replace a consultation.

Neurotrophic factors
Neurotrophic factors are molecules that take part naturally in the maintenance, survival, growth and functioning of the cells of the nervous system. Their roles include modulating neuronal plasticity, maintaining synaptic connections, and supporting the processes of adaptation and reorganisation of the nervous system.
In neurological rehabilitation, an approach aimed at favouring the neurotrophic environment seeks to provide biological conditions that accompany the neuroplasticity processes that occur after a brain or neurological injury.
This approach is integrated with stimulation and rehabilitative training, since activity and experience are fundamental stimuli for the functional reorganisation of the nervous system.
Nutritional supplements
Nutrition is an essential component of recovery and of maintaining function in people with neurological damage. Changes in mobility, swallowing, appetite, metabolism or body composition can lead to nutritional deficits and loss of muscle mass, particularly in patients with long-standing neurological conditions.
Nutritional supplements are used on an individual basis when the usual diet does not adequately cover the requirements for energy, protein, vitamins, minerals or other nutrients.
Their aim is to help maintain an adequate nutritional status, preserve muscle mass and support the patient’s functional capacity. The indication and composition of supplementation must be adapted to each person’s clinical, nutritional and metabolic characteristics.
Antioxidants
Neurological injuries can be associated with increased oxidative stress and with changes in the cellular mechanisms responsible for maintaining redox balance.
Antioxidants are substances able to take part in the defence systems against certain reactive species and to contribute to maintaining cellular homeostasis. Some form part of the body’s own antioxidant mechanisms, while others can be provided through diet or, where indicated, through supplementation.
At Foltra, the antioxidant approach is framed as part of an overall strategy aimed at providing a suitable metabolic environment for cellular and neuronal function. Its use must be individualised, taking into account nutritional status, clinical characteristics and concurrent treatments.
Metabolic regulators
The nervous system has a high energy demand and depends on carefully regulated cellular metabolism to maintain neuronal function and the activity of nerve networks.
After a neurological injury there may be changes in energy metabolism, in the use of certain nutrients, and in various cellular pathways related to neuronal survival and function.
Metabolic regulators cover different strategies intended to optimise the body’s metabolic environment and to favour suitable conditions for cellular function. Depending on each patient’s needs, these interventions may be directed at energy metabolism, nutritional balance, and certain processes related to neuronal function.
At Foltra, this approach is integrated within an individualised rehabilitation programme, taking into account each patient’s clinical, nutritional and functional situation.
